Oakland A's will have no players participating in World Baseball Classic

PHOENIX -- A's left-handed pitcher Pedro Figueroa won't be leaving spring training after all.

Manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday morning that Figueroa, who had been down to pitch for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, will instead be staying put.

The 27-year-old left-hander had been scheduled to pitch in the WBC as recently as Monday. With his withdrawal from that competition, the A's now have no players taking part in the WBC.

Melvin said he would never stand between a player and the chance to represent his country on an international stage. At the same time, the manager said it was a relief to know that all of the Oakland pitchers will be in camp throughout so that each will have equal time to be judged.
