LOCAL SPORTS BRIEFS: SHS basketball plate sale today

The Spalding High School Boys Basketball Booster Club is sponsoring a plate sale. The plates are $6 each which consist of chip barbecue, coleslaw, baked beans, bread and cake. Plates can be picked up at Spalding High School during the ?Tailgate Party? between 3-4:30 p.m. today. Tailgate festivities will include music, food, face painting, and performances by the step-teams, and cheerleaders. Spalding High Basketball T-shirts will be available for purchase; sizes small ? XL are $10. Sizes 2X and above are $15. You may also sign-up for the half-time half/court shot contest for $1 to win a gift card to Longhorn Steakhouse.

BASEBALL TRYOUTS

The Atlanta South Christian Knights homeschool baseball organization will be conducting tryouts for the spring 2012 baseball season on Jan. 7 and Jan. 14. Teams will be formed for all age groups from 11/12 to varsity high school. The tryouts are open for all homeschool students ages 11-18 as of Sept. 1, 2011.

The Knights varsity and JV teams play other homeschool and private school high school teams, allowing homeschooled students the opportunity to play at a high school level since they are not eligible to play on public school teams due to their homeschooling status. SHS TD BOOSTER CLUB

The Spalding High Jaguars Touchdown Booster Club will meet have its first meeting of the year at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 12 in the commons at SHS.

The club will elect new officers and begin laying plans for the upcoming season.

NASH GIVING LESSONS

Former Griffin High baseball player and current Houston Astros minor-league outfielder Telvin Nash will provide hitting, fielding, throwing and footwork lessons on weekends from now until Feb. 12, 2012 for boys and girls ages 7-18. The purpose of the lessons will be to teach the youth the proper way to hit, field and throw to become better at baseball and to have fun at the same time.

Nash will provide lessons at the Center Field complex in Zebulon, Ga. every Saturday and Sunday. The start times will be at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and 3:45 p.m. on Sundays. The cost is $50 total and you can pay on Sundays. Nash helped the Griffin High Bears baseball team reach the state finals in 2008 and led them into the playoffs in 2009.
